Last month two of Los Angeles’s largest museums, the Getty Center and UCLA’s Hammer Museum, announced that they would start staying open later. Last night the Los Angeles County Museum of Art bucked the trend, announcing that it will start opening earlier on weekdays.

Beginning on July 1, LACMA will open one hour earlier every day: Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays at 11am instead of noon; Saturdays and Sundays at 10am instead of 11am. The new hours, designed to accommodate daytime visitors like tourists and families, will also see the museum closing three hours earlier on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays — at 5pm rather than 8pm.

LACMA’ss new weekly hours will be:

Monday: 11 am-5 pm
Tuesday: 11 am-5 pm
Wednesday: Closed
Thursday: 11 am-5 pm
Friday: 11 am-8 pm
Saturday: 10 am-7 pm
Sunday: 10 am-7 pm

The new hours, according to a museum press release, have been devised in response to visitor patterns. However those are bound to be distorted beginning on June 24, when LACMA formally unveils Michael Heizer’s much-hyped Land Art installation “Levitated Mass.”
